ST. JAMES ART GALLERY EXHIBIT

“Interpretations of Reformation Art:
Original works inspired by art work of Reformation artists”

The St. James Artist Group
Artists’ Reception: Sunday, October 8 at 6:00pm, following 5:00pm Jazz Vespers with guest jazz vocalist Marilyn Keller.
St. James Lutheran Church, 1315 SW Park Ave. Portland, OR 97201

The St. James Artist Group explores the works of the three Reformation artists: Lucas Cranach, Albrecht Dürer and Matthias Grünewald as inspiration in creating new works. What do the works of these Reformation artists suggest to us today? In various media, photography, print, paint, and drawing materials the St. James Artist group attempts to answer this question in individual styles from abstraction to expressionism to realism. The display pairs the artists’ works in reference to the Reformation art pieces whose images and themes that inspired them. Works are on display in Pioneer Chapel Art Gallery during the month of October. Viewing times Monday-Tuesday, Thursday-Friday 9am-3pm, Wednesdays 9-11am & 1-3pm, Sundays 11am-12pm, and by appointment. (Chelsea: 503-227-2439)

Jazz Vespers
Dec 17 @ 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Born into a musical family, Stan Bock began his professional musical career at the age of 15, playing “tailgate” trombone in his father’s Dixieland band. In college he studied music at Fort Hays State (Kansas), receiving his B.M.E., and then his M.M.in solo performance from the University of Northern Iowa. Stan then entered the U.S. Air Force Band program where he served as trombone soloist and lead player with various groups for over 19 years. During his Air Force career, Stan performed on radio, television, and on recordings throughout the United States and Europe. Stan arrived on the Portland, Oregon scene in the mid ’90s and has become one of the most active jazz trombonists in the area, performing with a full spectrum of musical groups throughout the United States. Stan currently lives in Vancouver, WA and is on the music faculty at Willamette University where he teaches low brass, and coaches brass ensembles and jazz combos. In the Fall term of ’05, Stan joined the jazz faculty at Mt. Hood Community College where he directs Jazz Band II and Jazz Combos. Stan Bock is an endorsing artist for C.G. Conn, Inc. and he appears throughout the Northwest as a Clinician and adjudicator. Christopher Woitach, another popular soloist with Jazz Vespers, joins the in-house trio this month.

This 45 minute jazz musical setting of the Evening Prayer liturgy is held once a month. Professional jazz musicians and vocalists lead this reflective service with scriptural reading, psalms, hymns, and prayer. Preludes and postludes from the broad jazz repertoire precede and follow the service. Families and children are welcome!
