St. James Listening Gatherings

Pastor David thanks all who have attended a Listening Gathering this Summer. A total of over 50 people from four groups have already shared a bit of their lives and spiritual hopes with him. Special thanks to all who have hosted the events in their neighborhood homes. If you haven’t attended a gathering yet, please consider one of the options listed here. Each event will begin with Pastor David sharing some words from Luke 19. Then he hopes you will share a bit of your life history and spiritual journey. Finally, help him by answering...

Pastor David Wants to Know You

Our ministry together at St. James begins Monday, July 16th. I’m excited and intend to hit the ground running by getting to know you — through trusting relationships Christ’s reign is advanced. I will immediately work with President Carl and the Council to create ten to twelve Listening Gatherings, hosted by members in their homes representing the geographical neighborhoods where St. James members reside or work. These one-time meetings will all have the same goals as I get to know you: 1) To be centered and grounded in the Luke 19 story...

A Note from Pastor David

What an honor it is to be your next pastor at St. James. I realize that I stand on the shoulders of pastoral leaders since 1890. Thank you for this opportunity to serve Christ with you. I will spend the month of June and a bit of July completing my ministry at St. Luke, spending time with my family and anticipating our work together. I will then step in the door at St. James on July 16th. Already the words from my mouth are changing from “your church” to “our church.” I’m excited. I’m also grateful for the strong ministry of Pastor...

Pastor David Knapp Called to St. James

On Sunday, April 15th, members of St. James heard Pastor David Knapp, of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Southwest Portland give the homily during the morning service. It was, in fact, his audition to be our next pastor. And response from the congregation was resounding. A Question & Answer session at Coffee Hour gave the opportunity for Pastor Knapp to introduce himself to the congregation. It was a serious but warm session of back and forth between Pastor and the group. There were some pauses, as he gave serious consideration to the...
