During this Advent and Christmas season we have many opportunities to celebrate at St. James.  Consider inviting a friend to share in the special events of this season.

Bach Cantata:  Sunday, December 4th, 5:00pm.
The St. James Bach Choir and Orchestra present Bach Cantata 61, written for the first Sunday in Advent.  Dr. Paul Tegels of Pacific Lutheran University will be the guest organist.  A reception in the Pioneer Chapel follows the Cantata.

Lucia Sunday:  December 11th, 9:30am.
Officially celebrated on December 13th, which marked the longest night of the year on the medieval calendar and Christmas, the Lutheran church commemorates Saint Lucy, a martyr of Syracuse, who lived in 304CE.  We celebrate Lucia during a special church service and at coffee hour following.  Come and join us!

Advent Soup/Service:  Wednesday, December 14th, 6:00pm.
A special evening of fellowship followed by an Advent service provides an opportunity to share our Christmas anticipation.  All are welcome.

St. James Artist Craft Sale:  Sunday, December 18th, 10:30am.
Our talented artists and members of St. James share their creations with you.  Come and be inspired and do some Christmas shopping at the same time!

Jazz Vespers and Artist Reception:  Sunday, December 18th, Vespers at 5:00pm and Reception at 6:00pm.
Our December Jazz Vespers always features some familiar Christmas tunes played by our shining in-house jazz quartet and featuring one of Portland’s jazz luminaries.  A reception follows.

Advent Labyrinth Walk and Contemplative Service:  Wednesday, December 21, 5:30-7:30pm.  
Celebrate the Winter Solstice and Return to Light with a walk in our new courtyard labyrinth, followed by a time of reflection, song and silence.  You are invited to join friends and members of the St. James community as we take time from the busyness of this season to be peace-filled and quiet.  Weather permitting, we will walk St. James’ new outdoor labyrinth from 5:30–6:30pm followed by an indoor time of song, silence and reflection in the Pioneer Chapel ending by 7:30pm.

Intergenerational Christmas Eve Service:  Saturday, December 24th, 4:30pm.
People of all ages are welcome to come to this family-friendly Christmas Eve Eucharist service.  This was a hit with the young families last year.  The children’s excitement anticipates the joy of Christmas morning.

Christmas Eve Candlelight Service:  Saturday, December 24th, 11:00pm.
Come and celebrate the birth of the Christ Child with this beautiful Candlelight Eucharist service.  Pre-service vocal and instrumental music begins at 10:30pm with the early music duo “De Organographia” Phil and Gayle Newman playing handmade Renaissance instruments.

Christmas Day Service:  Sunday, December 25th, 10:30am.
A joyous service celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.  Allelujah!

Carols and Cookies:  Sunday, January 1st, 2017, 10:30am.
Advent is over and we finally get to sing our favorite Christmas songs!  This has become a popular event for members of St. James.  And you might not even need a hymnal to sing along!

Bach Christmas Oratorio:  Sunday, January 8th, 2017, 5:00pm.
Christmas continues!  The St. James Bach Choir and Orchestra present Part VI of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, written for the Feast of Epiphany.  A reception in the Pioneer Chapel follows the service.
