St. James Visual Arts Group

The Visual Arts Group presents the “Stations of the Cross” by Gregory Palestri.

Artist Gregory Palestri bases his work on the “golden ratio,” a proportion found everywhere in nature and considered the proportion of harmony since classical times. In this series he also only uses black and gold. Palestri says, “Gold is the pure reflection of light, of brilliance, therefore it is the symbol of divine light.” Using gold leaf on a black panel with transparent gloss in some areas differs from most icons which begin with a white panel illuminated with gold. He paints in abstract symbolic language because it becomes a more universal language for interpretation.

Greg Palestri is a free-lance architectural designer and visual artist in New York City and Chicago. The sixteen icons were created in 2010 with acrylic on MDF board with gold leaf and clear polyurethane. The dimensions are 16” x 10”.

First Congregational UCC of Portland has very generously loaned us these works for the month of March.

NOTE: There will be no artist reception this month following the Jazz Vespers Service.
