We are worshiping just next door at Sixth Church of Christ, Scientist throughout the construction period at St. James. Join us for worship and fellowship on Sundays at 9:30am.
From Pastor David:
“Portland is a year-round destination for travelers who love to eat.”
–Washington Post
An August 17th article from The Washington Post probably surprised those who love to complain about the demise of Portland. Our city was listed with Italian towns as a great off-season place to visit. Our downtown is being restored. Our St. James building renovation is an additional sign of new life. We will return to the building on Sunday, October 23rd. Here are more signs of ministry life:
–September 11th: Our Sanctuary Choir returns to worship
–September 18th: Sunday School/Open Space kick-off
–October 23rd: Return to worship at St. James
–Oct. 23rd – Nov. 3rd: Season of Gratitude Emphasis
–November 13th: Re-Dedication Sunday and Bach Vespers.
Thanks for being partners with Portland as we change for the better.
–Pastor David
Music Ministry Update from Director of Music Ministry, Colin Stave:
Beginning September 8th, the Choir has resumed regular rehearsals from 7:15 to 8:45pm at Sixth Church. Their voices returned to the service on Sunday, September 11th. Some exciting things are happening in our music ministry! Our organ received some crucial hardware updates, we will dedicate a new piano later this season, and our Vespers services return on November 13th at 5:00pm. Mark your calendars!
Open Space Resumes:
Open Space returns on September 18th! Join us after coffee hour for a series of interesting adult educational events. Interested in leading an Open Space? Contact the front office for more information.
September 18th: Our Lutheran Tradition of Embracing Education
September 25th: Not Always a Pretty History: Anti-Semitism at the Wittenberg Church
October 2nd: Making Change: The Art of the Protest
October 9th: The Times They are A-Changin’?
St. James Child Development Center:
To say we are thrilled to be back in the building is an understatement. All classroom spaces have been beautifully updated with new carpeting, vinyl floor, and paint. We were also able to purchase new furnishings to replace aging equipment as we embark on our 41st year of providing high quality childcare and early learning. Please feel free to come in and see our spaces. St. James CDC has applied to be Multnomah County’s first “Preschool for All” (PFA) site on the west side of the Willamette River. Voters in Multnomah County overwhelmingly supported PFA on November 3rd, 2020 with 64% of voters approving the measure to extend early education to children across the county. PFA connects 3 and 4 year olds in Multnomah County to free, culturally responsive, inclusive preschool experiences. The program will grow over time, increasing the number of children and families that it serves each year. St. James will be reimbursed for up to ten childcare slots utilized by the program.

RETURNING TO OUR ST. JAMES BUILDING:
In August, the church office returned to our Park Ave. building, but the construction continues. Roofers are still hard at work. Last week a new roof was completed on the office and educational side of our St. James building. Currently the sanctuary roof is being replaced and new flooring is being installed in our worship area. We return to worship at St. James on Sunday, October 23rd, 2022 with guided tours by our Council. Mark your calendar for the big day!
