  • Summer Worship Music …
While the choir takes a well deserved break from leading in worship this summer, guest musicians are welcome. This is the perfect opportunity for college students home for the summer, musical visitors vacationing in the area, or parish members not usually able to participate in choir. All you need do is play or sing one piece (or more) appropriate for worship. Cantor Joe is available to accompany you. Please contact him to reserve a summer Sunday from June 16th to August 25th. Don’t forget to reach out to your summer guests! We can’t wait to hear you.
  • Feeding the Hungry …
For several months now, St. James members have partnered with Pastor Bruce Arnold in distributing a meal to those in need. We gather each Tuesday at 6:15pm by the Lincoln statue about a block from St. James. We hand out food, hygiene items and new socks. We have conversation, build relationships and learn about particular needs. On July 9th an out-of-state Lutheran youth group joined Pastor David in this act of kindness.
  • The Feast Day of Saint James …
On Sunday, July 21st, our congregation will celebrate the day of our namesake, Saint James, with our traditional feast. Please join us after church in the courtyard for a chance to pay homage to our own St. James, and to share in food, drink, fun, conversation, and community. The church will provide brats, beverages, and ice cream. There will be a sign-up sheet in Pioneer Chapel for folks to sign up to bring other items. Contact Charlotte Cook with any questions.
  • A “Thank You” Meal for St. James Apartment Residents …
On Sunday, August 18th, at 3:30pm, Verde Cocina Restaurants will graciously cater a delicious outdoor afternoon meal as St. James throws a “Thank You” picnic in the courtyard for those who live in our St. James Apartments. The meal will be followed by Jazz Vespers at 5:00pm in the courtyard. We look forward to getting to know our neighbors a little better, and sharing with them a little bit of what St. James has to offer. Join us as we meet those who benefit from this ministry.
  • WELCA Book Drive to Benefit William Temple House …
In July and August, WELCA will be participating in sponsoring a book drive to benefit a longstanding local non-profit — the William Temple House. Member Martha McKay originally brought our attention to this need. Located in NW Portland, the William Temple House provides resources and services to vulnerable populations in our community. They would greatly benefit from receiving new and gently used books in good condition to distribute to their clients. Any and all genres are welcome!
  • New Members At St. James …
On May 19th we welcomed ten new members. Our next welcoming day will be Sunday, September 8th. Speak with Pastor David if you too would like to be part of the St. James ministry family. In the past twelve months we have welcomed 38 new members.
  • Wedding Bells …
Congratulations to Ellerey and David Nelson, who were wed by Pastor David on Saturday, June 22nd. On July 13th, we celebrated the wedding of Angela Brown and Devon Singrey. And on August 3rd, we will celebrate the wedding of Karin Hatch and Erika Torrey.
  • Save the (new) Date …
On September 8th at 5:00 pm, St. James will be putting on a fundraiser to support the Bach Vespers Series. With the goal of reaching out to community members who may not be aware of St. James or what we do, the German themed event will take place in the courtyard with guest and in-house musicians, food and drink, and surprise entertainment. Please consider how you might support bountiful Bach at St. James, whether as advance organizer, vendor/supplier, event volunteer, and, of course, financial sponsor, large or small. Help us reach out to our local community of arts enthusiasts and sound the invitation loud. Stay tuned for more details! We hope to see you there.
