Friday Organ Recitals at 12:15pm

St. James will present a short organ recital every Friday, 12:15-12:45pm. Our new Cantor Joseph Pettit will play most of the recitals; there will occasionally be guest organists, or he will be joined by an instrumentalist or singer. You are welcome to bring a quiet lunch to enjoy during the music. Find your musical respite at week’s end here in the heart of the city every Friday. Recitals are free admission, although a freewill offering at the door will support Bach’s Lunch.

Bach’s Lunch in Lent:

Friday, March 8th: Kellyn Haley, trombone, and Cantor Joseph Z. Pettit, organ perform music of Alexandre Guilmant, Gustav Holst, and Anthony Plog.

Friday, March 15th: Nick Stevens, Trinity Episcopal Cathedral tenor choral scholar, and David Boeckh, Trinity Episcopal Cathedral organ scholar perform a program of John Stainer for Lent, with excerpts from his famous The Crucifixion.

Friday, March 22nd: Paul Moyer, St. James bass choral scholar performs music from Paul’s senior piano recital at Lewis & Clark College, featuring J. S. Bach, Alexander Scriabin, and Nikolai Kapustin.

Friday, March 29th: Marissa Moultrie, St. John’s Episcopal Church soprano choral scholar (Gig Harbor, WA), and Cantor Joseph Z. Pettit, organ.

The Christian Education Committee is excited to announce the return of Sunday School to St. James! The class serves children ages 4 through second grade. Parents, bring your children at 11:00 am to the large classroom on the second floor which faces Park Ave. Registration forms are available by the front desk.

Oregon Jewish Museum Tour

Centering Prayer: Wednesdays at 8:30 am, Pioneer Chapel

There is a weekly opportunity to practice this simple form of contemplative prayer weekly at St. James. Wednesday mornings at 8:30 a small gathering takes place in the Pioneer Chapel focused around a seed verse and 20 minute silence with closing prayer. We then adjourn to a nearby coffee shop for conversation. Former Lutheran/Episcopal PSU campus pastor Chris Laing is the convener. Why not try it out?

Midweek Eucharist

A thirty-minute liturgy of Holy Communion takes place in the intimate setting of the Pioneer Chapel. This service provides an opportunity for communal prayer, a brief sermon and reflection. Scriptures may be used from the Daily Lectionary or may reflect the Calendar of Saints and Commemorations available to the wider Christian community.

Contemplative Prayer @ St. James Lutheran Church

Contemplative Prayer at St. James meets twice a month.  Weather permitting, we will include a time of walking meditation with the new labyrinth as part of the morning.

Anyone interested in contemplative listening to God is invited to join us. We spend time in silence, in reading sacred texts, and praying for the world, each other and ourselves.

Jazz Vespers

2018-2019 Jazz Vespers Series Poster

This 45 minute jazz musical setting of the Evening Prayer liturgy is held once a month. Professional jazz musicians and vocalists lead this reflective service with scriptural reading, psalms, hymns, and prayer. Preludes and postludes from the broad jazz repertoire precede and follow the service. Families and children are welcome!

June through September Vesper Services may be held in the courtyard, weather permitting.
