Wednesday Noon Eucharist Returns …
We gather for Noon Eucharist and the Imposition of Ashes on Ash Wednesday, February 14th, 2024 as the Season of Lent begins. Then join us every Wednesday following for Noon Eucharist in Pioneer Chapel and a Bible Exploration Class led by Pastor David. These events will continue until the Festival of Pentecost in May.
WEDNESDAY NOON EUCHARIST AND CHURCH HISTORY …
We will gather this spring for a midweek reflection and exploration with Pastor David. From February 21st through May 15th, our Lenten and Easter seasons will be enhanced by:
–A half-hour Wednesday 12:00 noon service of Eucharist in Pioneer Chapel
–A discussion of our Early Church History at 12:45pm.
–Our study will be “From Jesus to Constantine: Early Christianity.” With the help of Professor Bart Ehrman and others we will search for how the Bible was compiled. We will look at the wide-range of “Christianities” that were labeled as heresies and discover how the creeds of the church came to be. How did the number of followers of Jesus of Nazareth grow from 12 Disciples to the religion of record in the span of 400 years? How does our history inform our faithfulness today? Join Pastor David each Wednesday.
A thirty-minute liturgy of Holy Communion takes place in the intimate setting of the Pioneer Chapel. This service provides an opportunity for communal prayer, a brief sermon and reflection. Scriptures may be used from the Daily Lectionary or may reflect the Calendar of Saints and Commemorations available to the wider Christian community.
Ralph Erwin passed away on Mar 19. To commemorate his incredible contribution to all our lives there will be a Celebration of Life for him on the 16th of Jun 2018. This will be a nontraditional informal service, a gathering of friends and loved ones reflecting on the amazing volunteer and awesome person he was.

E.L.C.A. Series, June 2018
Five Lutheran Theologians, an Agnostic, and an Anabaptist walk into a church. No, it’s not the opening line of a theological humorist’s stand-up routine, it’s St. James’ Open Space four-part series on the E.L.C.A.! Ever wonder about those four letters, about those four words – Evangelical. Lutheran. Church. in America.? Each week in June you can partake in a lively, funny, hopefully informative, and perhaps provocative conversation on each of these words. Join us as we reflect together on our varied experiences and understandings of each word, how they can reflect and shape our religious identity, and how we might navigate the various notions of these words in our contemporary lives.
6/17: C.– Church: “Of Christ, but In and For the World”
Polis, Agora, Ekklesia. City, Marketplace, Assembly. The brothers Reinhold and Richard Niebuhr were profoundly influential public theologians in 20th century American life. They each spoke to the church and on behalf of the church to politicians and policymakers about the intersection of religion, politics, ethics, and public life. What do the brothers Niebuhr have to say to help us be church in and for the world today? How can they help us articulate a pastoral and prophetic voice in the public square?
Hurray for one of the best, most fun, love filled days of the year!
You are invited to walk with the Welcoming Lutherans of ReconcilingWorks and our siblings in Christ in the Catholic community from Spirit of Grace. Join us as an individual or a congregation in the Pride parade to show your loving welcome, inclusion, and celebration for LGBTQ people!
This is a fun celebration of the positive diversity of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans communities, and a way to share the love and welcome of our supportive ELCA communities.
Bring fun or moving signs and wear your rainbow! Bubbles are a fun addition! *We recommend vertical signs instead of horizontal banners, to help the group feel more cohesive.*
We will meet on 6/17 between 10-11am. Details to follow. Check out the event on Facebook for the most up to date information: https://www.facebook.com/events/2069137109769962/

6/24: A. – in America: “I Pledge Allegiance?”
The power of a preposition properly placed. Is it the E.L.C. of A. or the E.L.C. in A.? We are a creedal church, not a national one. Is reciting the Creeds and obeying the First Commandment compatible with placing a hand over our heart and reciting the pledge of allegiance? It isn’t just Anabaptists who discern the difficulty of trying to serve two masters – God and country. German Christians in the 1930s and 1940s were confronted with a stark choice – pledge their allegiance to the Nazi state or face persecution, possible imprisonment, and perhaps death. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a founding member of the Confessing Church, and Karl Barth (yep, we met him three weeks ago), who crafted the Barmen Declaration – a statement of confession, allegiance, and resistance, provide us with the theological ballast needed to whether the temptations of a host of nasty –isms, starting with nationalism.
