Feb 13 @ 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm

Shrove Tuesday is the last day before the season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. Shrove Tuesday has come to be known as Fat Tuesday or Pancake Tuesday, as it is the last opportunity to use rich ingredients such as milk, eggs, and butter before Lent, commonly characterized by fasting and austerity.

St. James annually holds a Pancake Supper on Shrove Tuesday in the Pioneer Chapel, supported by freewill donations. We’ll have plenty of pancakes and maple syrup for you; just show up!

Cup of Mercy — Can you drink this Cup?
(Commitment to live sacrificially as Christ did)

How do you set aside time for Lenten reflection and meditation?
Please join us for a morning and early afternoon time of guided meditation, silence, opportunity for journaling, art, and/or labyrinth contemplation as we explore Christ’s cup of mercy and the questions we have about Christ’s invitation for us to drink the cup during his Passion. Can we hold, lift, drink this cup of Jesus’ passion?

We will end our time with the Eucharist led by Pastor Janet. The leaders will be Susan McBerry, Albert Alter and Pastor Janet.

Suggested donation: $10

St. James Congregational Forum on Seismic and Safety Issues
Oct 14 @ 11:00 am – 12:00 pm

Our Mission and our Place …
Join us for Open Space on Sunday, October 14th at 11:00am as our St. James leaders seek your input on if a seismic retrofit of our property is in line with our mission. Updated information will be shared.

The following is a report from President Carl Cottingham:
We Want to Hear From You
Anybody have three million dollars? What is seismic upgrade? Do we have earthquakes in Oregon? Why is the City of Portland pushing this issue? I thought St. James was finished with major decisions (Pastor, Music Minister) for a while?
We need your voice and input!
On October 14th (after Services) there will be an Open Space about the issue of seismic upgrade to St. James Lutheran Church. We would like to explore this issue and gather your opinion about it. It will have a dramatic impact on all of us, the CDC, the Congregation and the staff. Starting March 1st we will be required to post warning signs on the Pioneer Chapel about earthquake danger. This will be an expensive endeavor if we go ahead with it. We will be unable to do a total roof replacement if we don’t do it. We need you to step up and voice your opinion.
Come to the Open Space on Sunday, October 14th for more information.

BACH CANTATA VESPERS AT ST. JAMES

Second Sunday of Advent, December 9th, 2018, 5:00pm
Cantata 30: “Freue dich, erlöste Schar (Rejoice, Redeemed Flock)”
Motet: “Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Wake, Awake)”, Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach
The first Cantata of the season debuts on the second Sunday in Advent. Freue dich, erlöste Schar (Rejoice, Redeemed Flock). Bach composed it for the Feast of John the Baptist in 1738. He scored the Cantata for four vocal soloists (soprano, alto, tenor, bass), a four-part choir, two traversos, two oboes, oboe d’amore, concertato violin, accompanying strings (two violin parts and one viola part) and basso continuo. The Cantata features soloists Julie Kangas, soprano, Kathryn Weld, alto, Steven Arends, tenor and Barry Johnson, baritone, Scott Swope, baritone as well as the St. James Bach Choir. The Cantata is in twelve movements, divided in two parts, to be performed before and after the sermon. The Vesper service also includes a motet by Bach’s fifth son, Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach, Motet Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Wake, Awake). A reception and Holiday Arts & Craft sale follows the Vesper service in the Pioneer Chapel.
