Sound a happy song of thanks to Him…”  And concludes with the prayer, “Give us a peaceful year, protect us from all sorrow, and nourish us gently.”

Soloists Anna Haagenson, Laura Thoreson, Carl Halverson, and Kevin Walsh join St. James Bach Choir and orchestra of strings and 3 oboes. Hannah Brewer is guest organist with prelude music beginning at 4:50.

St. James Congregational Forum on Seismic and Safety Issues
Oct 14 @ 11:00 am – 12:00 pm

Our Mission and our Place …
Join us for Open Space on Sunday, October 14th at 11:00am as our St. James leaders seek your input on if a seismic retrofit of our property is in line with our mission. Updated information will be shared.

The following is a report from President Carl Cottingham:
We Want to Hear From You
Anybody have three million dollars? What is seismic upgrade? Do we have earthquakes in Oregon? Why is the City of Portland pushing this issue? I thought St. James was finished with major decisions (Pastor, Music Minister) for a while?
We need your voice and input!
On October 14th (after Services) there will be an Open Space about the issue of seismic upgrade to St. James Lutheran Church. We would like to explore this issue and gather your opinion about it. It will have a dramatic impact on all of us, the CDC, the Congregation and the staff. Starting March 1st we will be required to post warning signs on the Pioneer Chapel about earthquake danger. This will be an expensive endeavor if we go ahead with it. We will be unable to do a total roof replacement if we don’t do it. We need you to step up and voice your opinion.
Come to the Open Space on Sunday, October 14th for more information.

BACH CANTATA VESPERS AT ST. JAMES

NOTE: Bach Cantata Vesper RESCHEDULED Sunday, March 3rd, 5:00pm. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the February 3rd Bach Cantata Vesper has been rescheduled for Sunday, March 3rd. We look forward to seeing you then!

Please join us for a special Open House prior to the Cantata. Starting at 4:00pm, we welcome residents of the Ladd Tower Apartments for a wine and cheese reception.

Sunday, March 3rd, 5:00pm will feature The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple
Cantata 125: “Mit Fried’ und Freud’ ich fahr’ dahin (With Peace and Joy I Depart…)”

If you missed the December Bach Cantata Vesper, don’t miss this one! It was a spectacular debut for Cantor Joseph Z. Pettit and the St. James Bach Choir and Orchestra. The text in this Cantata is based on Martin Luther’s German translation of Simeon’s Canticle (Luke 2:29-32). Originally called the Feast of the Purification of Mary, the Cantata deals with the Presentation of the baby Jesus in the Temple, and Simeon’s response. Bach creates a most captivating, twenty-minute plus work opening with two superior movements, a fantasia chorus and alto aria using dance forms, respectively, of a pastorale and a sarabande for this 1725 Purification work.

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper @ St. James Lutheran Church
Mar 5 @ 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm

It’s Time To Eat Pancakes …

We gather on Tuesday, March 5 at 5:30pm for our Shrove Tuesday celebration. Historically celebrated the day before the season of Lent, shrove comes from the Latin word shrive which means to absolve. Before a season of Lenten fasting, households would use up oils and other foods. Pancakes are on the menu! Then join us the following day for Ash Wednesday Worship at Noon and 7:00pm for a solemn service with the imposition of ash upon our foreheads signifying repentance. The season concludes with the joyous celebration of Easter morning.
