Welcome to the website for St. James Lutheran Church, a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. St. James has served downtown Portland, the city and the larger region for more than 120 years. In the central city, St. James welcomes all and celebrates God’s grace and inclusive love with the gifts of Word, music, classic Lutheran liturgy, hospitality and service. As a Reconciling in Christ congregation, St. James welcomes people of all races, cultures, ethnicities, sexual orientations and gender identities.
Education, social advocacy, care for Creation, and community involvement are all ways we live out classic Lutheran biblical and theological perspectives. Music animates all we do here, as you will discover through our Sunday services, Jazz Vespers, and Bach Cantata Vespers services. Parish members are drawn from a thirty mile radius to celebrate Christ’s presence in Word and Sacrament, in learning and service. Our ministries have included the founding of a seminary (now Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley), the creation of a low income housing tower (the St. James Apartments, on the western corner of the church property), and a Foot Care Clinic. Hundreds of infants and young children have been enriched and encouraged in the St. James Child Development Center since 1981.
There is a place for you here: to gather in worship uplifted by music and the arts, striving for justice and peace, empowered by the Holy Spirit and reaching out in loving service to the community and the world. Join us!
