Ash Wednesday, this coming February 18th, initiates the rich Lenten Season at St. James and in our neighboring churches.  Liturgies for Imposition of Ashes and Holy Communion will take place at noon in the Pioneer Chapel and at 7:30pm in the Sanctuary. Each succeeding Wednesday will feature our Annual Soup Supper and Worship journeys among the downtown churches, with meal at 6:15pm, followed by worship at 7:00pm.  Our pastors will rotate pulpit responsibilities: February 25 – First Baptist, with the Rev. Christmas continues in January:  Bach Vespers

Bach Vespers on Sunday, January 4th at 5:00 pm will feature Bach’s Christmas Oratorio Part IV, which was composed for New Year’s Day, the day of the Naming of Jesus.  Soloists Kevin Walsh (baritone), Daniel Buchanan (tenor), and Christine Welch-Elder (soprano) join the St. James Bach Choir and full chamber orchestra with strings, two French horns and two oboes.  Principal horn player of the Oregon Symphony, John Cox, will be featured.  They will all hold forth in the 4th cantata of the Oratorio (made up of six cantatas to be sung on...

Advent-tide brings new opportunities to meet our neighbors. On Wednesday evening, December 10 at 6:45, we gather at First Presbyterian for soup supper, then move at 7:30 to their splendid sanctuary for a meditative service in the style of the Taizé community. Community Thanksgiving Dinner 2014

Members and friends of St. James once again offer a community Thanksgiving meal in the Pioneer Chapel on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 27th, beginning at 1:00PM.  We solicit gifts of roasted turkeys, side dishes, salads and desserts for this unforgettable celebration in the midst of our city.  Volunteers are needed – call the church office at 503-227-2439 to be connected with our team. Taos Habitat Mission Trip, Sept. 21-27

Members of St. James Lutheran and of St. Augustine Episcopal Church, Whidbey Island, WA, will join and journey to Taos, New Mexico to work on a Habitat for Humanity project there.  They will work to install appliances, roofing, sheet rock, do painting and insulation for much-needed housing.  They will enjoy work and worship together in a fascinating part of the country, and meet and mingle with local residents.  Cheer them on during the Sunday morning liturgy on September 14 and remember them in your thoughts and prayers.  They will return...

4 X 4 Friday August Noon Concerts

The tenth anniversary of the “4X4” concert series will again be hosted by St. James. On four Fridays in August, there will be four free noon-time concerts of music for one piano, four hands. Bach Cantata Vespers: June 15

Bach Cantata Vespers this coming Sunday, June 15th at 5:00pm.  The final Bach Vespers of the season will feature Bach’s Trinity Sunday Cantata 194 (Most highly desired festival of joy) with three oboes, strings, choir and soloists. The Vesper is the opening event for the regional conference of the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians.
