St. James Food Box Ministry:

Helping the Unsheltered with Food Boxes and Winter Coats …

Five days a week — every weekday (Monday through Friday) at 11:30am in the Park Blocks in front of our building — we bring boxes of food and needed items to those who gather steps from our door. We offer protein drinks and protein bars, fruit, cup-a-soup, bottled water, new socks, and hygiene items. Due to your generous financial gifts to the “Pastor’s Discretionary Fund” we purchased two dozen warm coats for our houseless neighbors. We distributed these coats on the South Park blocks and to our houseless neighbors who attended the spaghetti dinner in the Pioneer Chapel on Friday, December 16th.

Volunteers Needed …

We are in need of volunteers to pick up food donations from Fred Meyer on Tuesday mornings. These donations support our 5-day a week food box ministry to the houseless. If you have a vehicle and would like to get involved in this work, please contact the front desk.

NOTE: Schedule Change …

Our weekday distribution of needed items and food to those near our church continues. Our group will now meet only on Tuesdays, not on Tuesdays and Thursdays as we have in the past. This month we will gather to prepare food boxes on Tuesdays, April 9th and 23rd at 10:00am in Pioneer Chapel.

We hope you can join us!

Feeding the Hungry
Apr 23 @ 11:30 am – 12:30 pm

For more than a year now, St. James members have partnered with Pastor Bruce Arnold in distributing a meal to those in need. As we do what we can to help our unsheltered neighbors — we have conversation, build relationships and learn about particular needs.

You have read about city sanctioned “sweeps” that remove the houseless and tents from our sidewalks. New shelters are also opening, offering a safe environment. In the midst of these changes we continue to provide food and needed items to those in our neighborhood.

Midweek Eucharist
Apr 24 @ 12:00 pm – 12:30 pm

Wednesday Noon Eucharist Returns …
We gather for Noon Eucharist and the Imposition of Ashes on Ash Wednesday, February 14th, 2024 as the Season of Lent begins. Then join us every Wednesday following for Noon Eucharist in Pioneer Chapel and a Bible Exploration Class led by Pastor David. These events will continue until the Festival of Pentecost in May.

WEDNESDAY NOON EUCHARIST AND CHURCH HISTORY …
We will gather this spring for a midweek reflection and exploration with Pastor David. From February 21st through May 15th, our Lenten and Easter seasons will be enhanced by:
–A half-hour Wednesday 12:00 noon service of Eucharist in Pioneer Chapel
–A discussion of our Early Church History at 12:45pm.
–Our study will be “From Jesus to Constantine: Early Christianity.” With the help of Professor Bart Ehrman and others we will search for how the Bible was compiled. We will look at the wide-range of “Christianities” that were labeled as heresies and discover how the creeds of the church came to be. How did the number of followers of Jesus of Nazareth grow from 12 Disciples to the religion of record in the span of 400 years? How does our history inform our faithfulness today? Join Pastor David each Wednesday.

A thirty-minute liturgy of Holy Communion takes place in the intimate setting of the Pioneer Chapel. This service provides an opportunity for communal prayer, a brief sermon and reflection. Scriptures may be used from the Daily Lectionary or may reflect the Calendar of Saints and Commemorations available to the wider Christian community.

Contemplative Prayer at St. James

First and Third Saturday mornings, 9:30am

The 2023-2024 Contemplative Prayer group will reconvene in September.

Saturday Schedule 9:30-11:00am on Zoom:

September 2nd and 16th …

October 7th and 21st …

November 4th and 18th …

December 2nd and 16th …

January 20th only (no meeting on January 6th) …

February 3rd and 17th …

March 2nd and 16th …

April 6th and 20th …

Contact Susan McBerry for the link to the meetings.

You are invited to consider a contemplative practice with the Contemplative Prayer group who gather via Zoom to pray, learn, and share through silence and breath prayer. Participants often find that it is in the stillness and the silence of meditation that they become centered in the presence of God and become more open to the work of the Spirit within. Contact Susan McBerry for the Zoom link. Meetings are the first and third Saturdays of the month from 9:30 to 11:00am.

Taking time to remove oneself from the noise of daily life is a gift you can give yourself.

Anyone interested in contemplative listening to God is invited to join us. We spend time in silence, in reading sacred texts, and praying for the world, each other and ourselves.

For information about this group, contact Susan McBerry or the St. James front office.

We offer protein drinks and protein bars, fruit, cup-a-soup, bottled water, new socks, and hygiene items. In addition, we pick up donated food items from a local Fred Meyer and distribute those too.

You have read about city sanctioned “sweeps” that remove the houseless and tents from our sidewalks. New shelters are also opening, offering a safe environment. In the midst of these changes we continue to provide food and needed items to those in our neighborhood.

Our St. James Social Ministry continues to purchase items thanks to your faithful offerings to St. James.

Feeding the Hungry
May 15 @ 11:30 am – 12:30 pm

For more than a year now, St. James members have partnered with Pastor Bruce Arnold in distributing a meal to those in need. As we do what we can to help our unsheltered neighbors — we have conversation, build relationships and learn about particular needs.

In addition, we pick up donated food items from a local Fred Meyer and distribute those too.

Midweek Eucharist
May 15 @ 12:00 pm – 12:30 pm
